Dr. Bruce Patterson is a pioneering physician-scientist with a foundation in molecular biology and a career defined by paradigm-shifting discovery. His relentless curiosity about human disease at the cellular level has driven some of the most consequential research in modern virology — and that same spirit continues to fuel his work at the intersection of diagnostics and innovation.

During the early stages of the AIDS epidemic, Dr. Patterson began investigating cellular reservoirs of HIV-1 using molecular and in situ cell-based technology patented in his laboratory and now used around the world. His landmark finding — that sufficient HIV virus was present in infected individuals to account for massive immune system destruction — was published in Science in 1993 and featured in Scientific American, Rolling Stone, and the Discovery Channel. He was also an invited speaker at the Nobel Symposium in Stockholm in 1998.

Dr. Patterson served as Associate Professor of Pathology and Infectious Diseases and Director of Virology at Stanford University from 2003 to 2012, where he advanced the fields of single-cell biology and diagnostics. He has authored over 150 manuscripts and book chapters and has served on the NIH AIDS Immunology and Pathogenesis Study Section since 2006, cementing his standing as a leading voice in virology, immuno-oncology, and infectious disease research.

He currently serves as CEO and Founder of IncellDx Inc., translating decades of research into state-of-the-art single-cell diagnostics in cancer, immuno-oncology, and infectious diseases — with a particular focus on COVID-19 — bringing next-generation diagnostic tools from the laboratory to patients worldwide.
